Black Vintage Suzani
The making of a suzani is a fascinating archive of the private and communal lives of the tribal women of Central Asia. Its diverse yet distinctive motifs and designs trace influences from the Hellenistic, Persian, and Turkish worlds. Suzani, in Persian or Farsi, means ‘needlework’.

According to custom, a suzani was started when a girl was born, in preparation for her wedding. This floral design produce of suzani is for exporting around the world. Moreover, with so many women participating in its creation, the suzani became a form of artistic expression. Equally, a way to communicate with the world outside. Very broadly, they are hand-embroidered textiles traditionally made by family members for a Central Asian girl’s dowry.
