Each pouf is cut from cowhide and stitched by hand in panels — plain, or with an embroidered leather medallion on the top — usually with a zip underneath for the stuffing. They are made in Morocco in the traditional way; they are not old, and we do not call them antiques. Sizes vary a few centimetres from one to the next because the hide does.
A pouf is stuffed with whatever is soft and dense: old clothes and towels are the classic filling, a beanbag insert the modern one, wool or foam offcuts in between. Fill it firmly so it holds its shape. Leather likes a wipe with a damp cloth and an occasional leather conditioner; keep it away from radiators and direct sun, which dry and fade it.
