A near-square vintage suzani, 94 × 93 cm, on a black cotton ground with a broad yellow border — the yellow is what you notice first. Inside it the field is divided into a lattice of diamond-shaped medallions, each outlined by a white scrolling vine and filled with a different colour, red, blue or green, with a small motif at the heart of each (the previous listing called them teapots; see the close-up photograph and judge for yourself). Between the diamonds the black ground shows through, so the pattern has air in it despite the colour.
Silk thread on cotton, hand-embroidered in Uzbekistan in the Soviet period; a vintage piece, with the strong dyes of its time and the small unevenness of hand work.

Character and use
Almost square, so it hangs centred above a chest or a desk, or lies on a small round table. It is the most colourful of the small black-ground pieces.
