Pomegranates, the fertility fruit of Central Asian ornament, are the whole subject here: three horizontal bands run across a dark ground, each a golden-brown vine hung with red pomegranates split to show their seeds, with pink and blue flowers and cream leaf-motifs between, and rows of cream dots dividing the bands. Unusually for a suzani, the ground is not plain cotton but a solid-coloured ikat cloth — silk-cotton adras — so the embroidery sits on a fabric with its own faint sheen and texture.
Silk thread, hand-embroidered in Uzbekistan. Newly embroidered for Alesouk in the traditional stitches; it arrives clean, even and bright.

Character and use
The banded layout means it hangs landscape above a sofa or a bed with the bands horizontal; on a bed it is a single-bed cover. The pomegranate’s meaning is in what symbols are hidden in suzani; the adras cloth it is worked on is the same as our silk ikat fabric. Large Suzani.
