White on black, and nothing else — a suzani worked entirely in couching, the stitch Uzbek embroiderers call basma, in which a thick silk thread is laid on the cloth and fastened down with tiny stitches so that it builds up a raised, satin-like surface. Here it covers almost the whole black cotton ground: a central medallion of spirals and pinwheels, a scroll of leaves and flowers around it, and rows of the same motifs out to the edge. Because there is no colour to read, the eye follows the texture, and the piece changes with the light through the day.
Silk thread on cotton, hand-embroidered in Uzbekistan. Newly embroidered for Alesouk in the traditional stitches; it arrives clean, even and bright.
