Red Uzbek Suzani with White Tulips, 100 × 140 cm

Two colours and one flower: white tulips, drawn as the simple three-pointed bud of Central Asian ornament, scattered over a red cotton ground on trailing vines with small white blossoms between, and a border of the same white on red. The tulip has been a motif of Uzbek embroidery for as long as there are pieces to look at, and here it is used with unusual restraint — no roundels, no second colour — which makes the piece easy to place.

Silk thread on cotton, hand-embroidered in Uzbekistan. Newly embroidered for Alesouk in the traditional stitches; it arrives clean, even and bright.
