Orange scrolls run across a cream ground with medallions set between them, each ringed in blue around a pink centre. Four colours, and the pink core is a single narrow tie that took as long to prepare as the whole orange field.

How this ikat is made
The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. Every soft edge on this cover is the dye finding its way past a tie, which is why no two lumbar covers off the same bolt are identical. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
