Yellow Lumbar Ikat Cushion Cover with Ram-Horn Scrolls

Charcoal ram-horn scrolls turn across a strong yellow ground. The ram horn is the oldest motif in the Central Asian repertoire — older than the towns the cloth is woven in — and yellow is the least stable dye to hold this evenly.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. Every soft edge on this cover is the dye finding its way past a tie, which is why no two lumbar covers off the same bolt are identical. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
