Red and Cream Lumbar Ikat Cushion Cover

Red ovals repeat across a cream ground with small yellow and pale blue marks caught between them. The pale ground carries most of the cover, so the red reads as decoration rather than as the whole point.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. Every soft edge on this cover is the dye finding its way past a tie, which is why no two lumbar covers off the same bolt are identical. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
