Black and Cream Lumbar Ikat Cushion Cover

Black flames interlock across a cream ground, close enough together that the cover reads as texture from a distance and as pattern up close. Black on cream is the hardest bath to keep even — nothing hides a weak dye.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. Every soft edge on this cover is the dye finding its way past a tie, which is why no two lumbar covers off the same bolt are identical. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
