    The 40 cm loom, again

A lumbar is the shape the cloth wants to be. Margilan ikat comes off the loom 40 cm wide, so a 36 cm-high cover is cut straight across the width with the pattern running its full length, unpieced, and the large classical repeats — 60 cm on the small designs, longer on the big rosettes — sit inside the 58 cm length. It is the cover on which an ikat pattern reads best.

    Where to use it

In front of a square cushion on a sofa; alone on an armchair; at the head of a bed across the pillows; in a row along a bench, where the two 102 cm covers were made to go. Cotton for the seats that are leaned on; adras for the ones that are looked at. The Cushions page has the insert sizes for every shape, and the ikat pillow covers post has room-by-room combinations.

    Care

Remove the insert. Cotton: gentle machine wash at 30 °C in a bag; adras: hand wash at 30 °C. Dry in the shade, iron on the reverse. Rules in how to wash ikat fabric.

    Frequently asked questions

What size is a lumbar ikat pillow cover?

    At Alesouk, 36 × 58 cm (14 × 23 in), with two extra-long covers at 38 × 102 cm; fit a 40 × 60 cm insert. The cover has a concealed side zip and no insert.

Is the lumbar cover the same on both sides?

Yes; the same handwoven ikat is used front and back, so the cover is reversible.

How much do lumbar ikat covers cost?

$12.50–15 for cotton and $20–30 for silk-cotton adras at Alesouk.

Why is there no seam on a lumbar ikat cover?

Because Margilan ikat is woven 40 cm wide and a 36 cm-high cover is cut straight across one width, so the pattern runs unbroken along the 58 cm length.

Can I wash a lumbar ikat cover?

Cotton covers, gentle machine wash at 30 °C in a bag; adras covers, hand wash at 30 °C. Remove the insert, dry in the shade, iron on the reverse.
