Cream scrolls turn out of a deep green ground with small magenta marks caught between them. All cotton, so this one takes a gentle machine wash — worth knowing for a cover that gets leaned on.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. Every soft edge on this cover is the dye finding its way past a tie, which is why no two lumbar covers off the same bolt are identical. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
