Charcoal scrollwork curls across a strong yellow ground, the forms hooking into one another the whole length of the cover. Yellow is the hardest colour to get even in a warp dye, which is why it is the least common in the bolster run.

How this ikat is made
The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. On a cover this long you see the repeat run its full course rather than framed in a square, and every soft edge is the dye finding its way past a tie. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
