Hot pink spots sit in rows on a pale blue-grey ground, each blurred at the edge where the dye ran past a tie. Pink on blue rather than on white, which takes the sweetness out of it.

How this ikat is made
The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. Every soft edge on this cover is the dye finding its way past a tie, which is why no two lumbar covers off the same bolt are identical. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
