Red and Yellow Lumbar Ikat Cushion Cover on Cream

Red medallions with yellow crowns sit on a cream ground, with green and charcoal scrolls curling beneath them. Five colours in a single warp, each one needing the whole cloth tied and untied again before the next bath.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. Every soft edge on this cover is the dye finding its way past a tie, which is why no two lumbar covers off the same bolt are identical. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
