A crowned medallion in ochre and charcoal stands at the centre of a red and cream cloth, with stepped forms opening either side of it. Four colours in one warp, and the crown lands square in the middle of the cover — placing a single motif that precisely on a long, narrow cut is the hard part.

How this ikat is made
The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. Every soft edge on this cover is the dye finding its way past a tie, which is why no two lumbar covers off the same bolt are identical. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
