Black and white bakhmal — silk velvet ikat, where the pattern is dyed into a supplementary pile warp, raised over rods and cut by hand after weaving. It is the most laborious cloth in Uzbekistan and by our count only two to four masters still weave it on a handloom. Made up here as a jacket with tapered trousers.

How to wear it
Velvet ikat is the dearest cloth in the shop and this is the only garment cut from it in a tailored shape. Keep everything else plain and dark. Silk pile crushes where it is sat on or pressed, so this is a standing-up outfit rather than a long-journey one. See the cloth by the metre as silk velvet ikat.
How this ikat is made
The pattern is not printed on the cloth and it is not embroidered into it. Every thread of the warp is tied off in bundles and dyed, one colour at a time, before a single row is woven — a process called abrbandi, cloud-binding, for the soft feathered edge it leaves on every motif. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan in the Fergana Valley. The garment is then cut and sewn in our atelier in Tashkent.
