Green and aubergine bands frame a white panel of red and yellow almonds. Green next to red is the hardest pairing to keep clean in a dye vat, which is why the two are separated by a band rather than allowed to meet.

How this ikat is made
The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. Every soft edge on this cover is the dye finding its way past a tie, which is why no two lumbar covers off the same bolt are identical. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
