Periwinkle and Maroon Silk Ikat Cushion Cover

A maroon medallion sits at the centre of a periwinkle cloth with orange spots in a row along the foot. Four colours, and the orange is a single narrow tie that took as long to prepare as the whole blue field.

Where it goes

It works on a grey, white or navy sofa, and suits a bedroom chair or a bench. More ikat cushion covers, or the same cloth by the metre if you would rather sew your own.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. The weaver works to a design that exists only as knots on a stretched warp, and every extra colour is another round of tying and dyeing. That is why the edges feather rather than cut sharp, and why no two covers are quite the same. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.

Availability

This cover is out of stock. The cloth is handwoven in small runs, so it is not always on the shelf — but the design can be woven again. If you would like this one, tell us through the contact page and we will let you know when it can be made and how long the weaving will take.
