Aubergine and Pink Silk Ikat Cushion Cover

Pink diamonds sit on a dark aubergine ground with white feathering between them. The dark brown reads almost black in evening light, and the pink is the only thing that keeps the cover from disappearing into a dark sofa.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. The weaver works to a design that exists only as knots on a stretched warp, and every extra colour is another round of tying and dyeing. That is why the edges feather rather than cut sharp, and why no two covers are quite the same. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
