Khaki and Burgundy Ikat Chapan, Lined

A full-length chapan in olive khaki, with burgundy and black running through the almond figures that climb the length of it. The edges, cuffs and front opening are finished with a contrasting woven band — the detail that separates a real chapan from a robe cut to look like one. It is lined, so it holds its shape and sits heavier on the shoulder than the unlined robes.

How to wear it

A chapan is not a dressing gown and it is not a coat in the European sense. It is worn open, over whatever you already have on, and it is the one garment in Uzbekistan that men and women wear in the same cut. Over jeans and a plain shirt it does most of the work of an outfit on its own. See the rest of the robes and chapans, or the same cloth as ikat fabric by the metre.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is not printed on the cloth and it is not embroidered into it. Every thread of the warp is tied off in bundles and dyed, one colour at a time, before a single row is woven — a process called abrbandi, cloud-binding, for the soft feathered edge it leaves on every motif. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan in the Fergana Valley. The garment is then cut and sewn in our atelier in Tashkent.
