Royal Blue and Orange Ikat Short Jacket

Royal blue and turquoise flames with orange at the centre of each, cut as a hip-length jacket rather than the long robe the old listing implied. Blue and orange sit opposite one another, which is why the cloth reads as bright as it does — and why each needed its own dye bath, with neither able to be laid over the other.

How to wear it

Worn over a plain base — a shift, a shirt, a plain tee. A jacket is the least demanding way to wear ikat: it puts the pattern at the shoulder where it is seen and leaves the rest of the outfit alone. See the other ikat jackets, or the cloth itself as ikat fabric by the metre.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is not printed on the cloth and it is not embroidered into it. Every thread of the warp is tied off in bundles and dyed, one colour at a time, before a single row is woven — a process called abrbandi, cloud-binding, for the soft feathered edge it leaves on every motif. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan in the Fergana Valley. The garment is then cut and sewn in our atelier in Tashkent.
