Periwinkle Silk Ikat Cushion Cover

A large paired almond fills the centre of a periwinkle cloth, its two halves meeting to make something close to a heart. Around it the pattern breaks into narrow columns, which is how a Fergana weaver fills the space either side of a big central motif.

Where it goes

It suits a white, grey or navy sofa, a bedroom chair, or a pair at the head of a bed. More ikat cushion covers, or the same cloth by the metre if you would rather sew your own.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. The weaver works to a design that exists only as knots on a stretched warp, and every extra colour is another round of tying and dyeing. That is why the edges feather rather than cut sharp, and why no two covers are quite the same. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
