Purple Chevron Silk Ikat Cushion Cover

Purple chevrons zigzag down a white ground, each point softened where the dye crept along the tied threads. The silk gives the purple a shine that a printed chevron never has.

Where it goes

It works on a white or grey sofa, a bedroom chair, or a pair either side of a bed. More ikat cushion covers, or the same cloth by the metre if you would rather sew your own.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. The weaver works to a design that exists only as knots on a stretched warp, and every extra colour is another round of tying and dyeing. That is why the edges feather rather than cut sharp, and why no two covers are quite the same. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
