Pink Silk Ikat Cushion Cover with Blue Centres

Pink and magenta medallions repeat across a white ground, each holding a small pale-blue centre. The blue is a single extra dye bath in the tying, and it is what stops the cloth reading as one flat pink.

How this ikat is made

The pattern is tied and dyed into the warp threads before a single row is woven — abrbandi, the cloud-binding. The weaver works to a design that exists only as knots on a stretched warp, and every extra colour is another round of tying and dyeing. That is why the edges feather rather than cut sharp, and why no two covers are quite the same. The cloth is handwoven in Margilan, in the Fergana Valley; the cover is cut and sewn in our own workshop in Bukhara.
