A Margilan velvet loom is 40 cm wide, and the pile has a nap, so the natural cover is one width of cloth, 37–38 cm high, cut to the length you want: 58 cm makes a lumbar, 40 cm a near-square. That is why this section is mostly long shapes and why there is no seam across the face of a velvet cover. A 50 cm square in velvet would need piecing across the pile, which shows, so we do not make one. The velvet fabric page explains how bakhmal is woven and why it costs what it does.
On the back of a sofa, where it is seen and not sat on: silk velvet crushes under daily weight, so one lumbar against plain linen or wool does more than three, and lasts longer. On a bed, across the pillows. On a bench or a window seat, behind the back. A velvet cover next to a cotton ikat square in the same colour family is the classic pairing, and the silk velvet at home post has more.
Remove the insert. The listing says hand wash at 30 °C or dry-clean; we would dry-clean, and if you wash, do it cold, never wring, dry flat with the pile up and never iron the face — steam it from the back to lift the pile. Store flat or rolled, not folded. Full velvet care is on the fabric page.
