Kilim Rugs

Rugs in kilim designs, hand-woven in Afghanistan: bands, stepped diamonds and hooked motifs in red, blue, ochre and natural tones. Every kilim here is flat-woven, with no pile, so it is thinner and lighter than a knotted rug.

Sizes range from small mats of about 90 × 55 cm and 165 × 80 cm runners to rugs of about 185 × 120 cm, with one long hall runner. Each rug is unique, and its size is on the listing.

    What a kilim is

A kilim is woven rather than knotted. The coloured wefts are passed through the warp threads and beaten down tightly, so the pattern is made in the weave itself and there is no pile. That makes a kilim thinner, lighter and easier to move than a pile rug, and it is why kilim patterns are built from straight lines, steps and diamonds rather than curves. Kilims have been woven across Afghanistan, Iran, Anatolia and Central Asia for centuries, as floor covers, door hangings and bags.

    Where a kilim works

A runner of about 165 × 80 cm suits a hallway, the side of a bed or the front of a kitchen counter. A small mat works at a door or under a desk chair. A larger kilim can go under a coffee table, and because kilims are light, they also hang well on a wall or lie over a bench or the end of a bed.

    Looking after a kilim

Vacuum on a low setting without a rotating brush, or shake a small kilim outside. Use a thin underlay on a hard floor so it does not slip. Blot spills straight away with cold water and a clean cloth, and turn the kilim every few months so it fades evenly. For a full clean, use a professional rug cleaner.

    Questions

What is the difference between a kilim and a pile rug?

A pile rug has a soft surface of knotted wool; a kilim is flat-woven with no pile. Every rug in this section is a flat-woven kilim. The Afghan Rugs section holds the pile rugs in other designs.

    Where are these kilims made?

In Afghanistan, by hand. A name such as "Turkish", "Anatolian" or "Moroccan" on a listing describes the design.

    How are they shipped?

By tracked airmail from Bukhara, Uzbekistan: USA 9–18 working days, Europe and the UK 8–16, elsewhere 10–20. Shipping is calculated by weight at checkout.
