Cotton Ikat Dresses and Tunics

The washable section: ten pieces in 100% cotton ikat from Margilan — mini and short dresses, a tunic, a kimono-style wrap — from $54, made to order in Tashkent in your size. Cotton ikat is matt, cool and firm; it goes in the machine on a delicate cycle at 30 °C, which the silk pieces do not, and it is the cloth for summer, for the beach and for children. Sizes S–XL or your measurements; 18–25 days to make, then tracked airmail.

The one or two adras pieces in this section say so on the listing and are priced with the silk dresses.

    Cotton ikat as clothing

Cotton was the everyday ikat of the Fergana Valley — the cloth apprentices learn on and the cloth a household could afford — and it makes the most practical garment on the site: it breathes, it washes, it softens with wear, and a mistake in the wash costs a great deal less than in silk. A short dress takes 4–6 metres of 40 cm cloth; a tunic 3–4. The cotton ikat page has the cloth by the metre if you would rather have it made up at home.

    Sizes and custom sizes

S–XL on most listings, one size on the tunic and the kimono-style wrap; any piece cut to your measurements on request. Write to us with the listing and the measurements.

    Care

Delicate machine wash at 30 °C in a bag, or hand wash; dry in the shade; iron on the reverse while damp. Pre-shrunk before cutting. Wash reds and indigos alone the first time. Full rules in how to wash ikat fabric.

    Frequently asked questions

Can a cotton ikat dress go in the washing machine?

Yes, on a delicate cycle at 30 °C in a wash bag; dry in the shade and iron on the reverse. That is the main reason to choose cotton ikat over silk for everyday wear.

How much does a cotton ikat dress cost?

From $54 for a tunic or short dress at Alesouk; the few adras pieces in the section are priced with the silk dresses.

    What sizes are available?

S–XL on most listings, one size on the tunic and the kimono-style wrap, and any piece can be cut to your measurements.

How long does a made-to-order cotton ikat dress take?

18–25 days to make in Tashkent, then tracked airmail: USA 9–18 working days, Europe and the UK 8–16, elsewhere 10–20.

    Is the cotton ikat handwoven?

Yes, in Margilan, Uzbekistan, on hand looms 40 cm wide; the same cloth is sold by the metre on the Cotton Ikats page.
